Encampment Care
Overview
Complex issues call for collaborative action. REACH Niagara partners Gateway Niagara’s NASO team to bring primary care, counselling, and other essential services directly to homeless encampments. A group of allied healthcare and social service professionals meet people where they live to ensure that no member of Niagara is left without care.
Who is the program for?
We collaborate with NASO who helps identify encampments in advance that require healthcare services. Community members can call 211 should they have a concern about an encampment and the needs of those who reside within.
What are the benefits?
Our goal is to build trust with our clients to help them come to our regularly scheduled mobile and indoor clinics to receive better, more regular care and support. Other benefits include:
- Access to real time medical care and social supports
- Oftentimes people risk having their possessions stolen making leaving encampments a choice between receiving care or potentially losing their home.
- Finding primary care when they do not have a fixed address, identification and transportation. Oftentimes encampment care teams are people’s only opportunity to access healthcare.
